ILGA has a new Gender Identity and Gender Expression Strategy
The ILGA World Board passed a new Gender Identity and Gender Expression Strategy at the recent board meeting in Bangkok. The strategy has been developed by the Gender Identity and Gender Expression Officer, Zhan Chiam at the ILGA World Office in Geneva and Mikee Mikee Nunez-Inton of the Trans Secretariat in consultation with a number of global Trans organisations, including TGEU.
Print HTMLThe main focus of the strategy is to develop the work at the UN based on publications and reports on trans human rights which can be used as an advocacy tool. The aim is through collaboration, engagement and support with other organisations, strategically and systematically engage various aspects of the UN, such as the Human Rights Council, Treaty Bodies, Universal Periodic Review, Special Procedures, the World Health Organization, UNAIDS, and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, to advance Trans human rights. Where wanted and needed, ILGA will do advocacy work towards national governments in cooperation with the Local Trans organisations.
ILGA will support and not duplicate the work of local, regional and global Trans-led organisations and programs and respect regional differences in priorities and needs, based on local experiences and needs. The strategy also includes those who identify as third gender or non-gendered and to be inclusive in this respect.
Another goal is to raise avareness of trans issues in the broader public world wide as well as within other human rights NGO – both mainstream and LGBTI organisations.
