LGBTI equality and human rights in Europe and Central Asia

Celebrating family diversity

ILGA-Europe and NELFA were meeting today in Brussels to discuss our joint work to advance the fundamental rights of rainbow families in Europe.

We are more motivated than ever to develop this shared work, in a European context which proves to be challenging and promising in equal measure.

For example, both organisations are preparing for International Family Equality Day on 1 May 2016 to celebrate family diversity worldwide. Society, politicians and decision makers in particular, must embrace equal treatment and recognition of all family forms, both socially and legally.

In the margin of our meeting in Brussels, we noticed the policy document issued today by the head of the Catholic church. The Pope's statement was particularly timely, as ILGA-Europe have been examining the myths that have built up around religion and identities of LGBTI people. During our Gay vs God? campaign, we have been dispelling the idea that faith communities and LGBTI people have nothing in common.
