Joining forces against homo- transphobic hate crime in The Hague
The closing conference of the ILGA-Europe project ‘Working with the police and challenging hate crimes in Europe 2008-2011’ is taking place in The Hague on 8 and 9 December 2011. The project was funded by the Dutch government and also supported by the European Union.
Print HTMLThe project focused on the learning experiences on tackling hate crime and moreover provided hands-on-tools to LGBTI organisations and police institutions in Europe (see note 2 and 3).
Secretary of State of Security and Justice Fred Teeven and Minister for Education, Culture and Science Marja van Bijsterveldt-Vliegenthart of the Dutch government are taking part in the closing conference together with representatives of ILGA-Europe member organisations, police institutions, public prosecutors, politicians and national equality bodies.
The conference will be a new starting point for policy makers to do comprehensive strategies to combat violence against LGBTI people on a national level as well as on a European level.
“This conference is an excellent opportunity for LGBTI organisations, politicians, representatives from police authorities and others to come together and build strategies based on the learnings from the project” Greg Czarnecki, Member of the ILGA-Europe Executive Board and present at the conference said. He continued; “The project has proved that the dialogue between these stakeholders is absolutely crucial in order to effectively combat hate crime. ILGA-Europe would like to thank the Dutch government for spearheading a European approach to tackling homophobic and transphobic hatred.”
