World Medical Association adopts trans guidelines

At its 66th general assembly, held in Moscow, the World Medical Association, an international organisation representing doctors, adopted new guidelines aimed at increasing the knowledge and sensitivity of doctors towards trans people.

ILGA-Europe welcome the World Medical Association recommendations which emphasise the need for informed and explicit patient’s consent, condemn all forms of coercive treatment, discrimination and violence, including the requirement of sterilisation as part of legal gender recognition procedures.

The guidelines include intersex people within a broad trans definition. However, we want to point out that intersex persons are inadequately referred to, both in terms of the guidance contents and the vocabulary that is used.

In addition, this guidance would have been even more powerful if it had acknowledged past and current violations of the right to health trans and intersex persons have faced and continue to face.
