Council of Europe adopts progressive strategy on the rights of the child
The Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers adopted on the 3 March its rights of the child strategy, covering the period 2016-2021.
The strategy foresees in particular that the Council of Europe will undertake research on the situation of LGBT and intersex children as regards the realisation of their rights.
It identifies 5 priority areas: equal opportunities for all children, participation of all children, a life free from violence, child-friendly justice for all children, and rights of the child in the digital environment.
ILGA-Europe welcomes the mention of the need to research the specific situation of LGBTI children within the first priority area – equal opportunities. We believe however that the five priorities of the strategy are extremely relevant to LGBTI children and children brought up in rainbow families. We will make sure, together with our members, to contribute to the monitoring of the strategy’s implementation, in its integrality.
